Sen. George Mitchell at State House to tout scholarship program
Mitchell Scholarship Program has helped more than 1,000 Maine kids go to college

AUGUSTA- Former US Senator George Mitchell was at the State House on Wednesday to speak to Legislators about the scholarship program he created to help send civic-minded Maine public high school graduates on to college.

“Each year we award a scholarship to a graduating senior from every public high school in Maine. And I’m please to tell you we are near realizing our objective to do that in perpetuity – forever.” [CLIP 1 – 15 SECS]

The Mitchell Scholarship program has awarded nearly $4 million in financial assistance to more than 1,000 Maine students since 1995. Every year a Mitchell Scholarship is awarded to one graduate from each of the 130 public high schools in Maine. Senator Mitchell is working to raise enough funds to secure the scholarships far into the future.

Speaker of the House John Richardson said he was inspired by the Senator’s words and his efforts.

“Senator Mitchell is an example what a person can do when they are given the opportunity of a good education. His legacy will serve as a reminder that we must continue to invest our in future by investing in our public schools.”

Senator Mitchell summed up his remarks by urging lawmakers to give every student in Maine the opportunity to succeed.

“In Maine, in America, no one should be guaranteed success, but everyone should have a fair chance to succeed.” [CLIP 2 – 11 SECS]
